Parents and guardians in Akwa Ibom State are in a state of confusion as the state government has yet to issue a directive on whether or not public schools would resume on Monday, 6th January, 2025, five days after the New Year Day celebrations.
This is just as one of the leading Private Schools, Nobles International Schools located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital has announced the postponement of resumption from 6th January to 13th January, 2025.
Reacting to the news of the postponement by Nobles Schools which was shared to one of the platforms monitored by this reporter, a concerned parent who expressed her frustration blamed what she described as “…state government’s casualness on matters such as school resumption “.
She noted “Today is Friday, 3rd January in a New Year, 2025. By now, a state government supposed to have issued a directive on whether the public schools are resuming on the 6th or not. We head(sic) that the federal government had issued a statement on the postponement of resumption of Unity Colleges.
This state government’s casualness on matters such as school resumption in a new year is not only confusing, but worrisome “.
It would be recalled that the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad had approved the extension of resumption date for Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) from the 5th of January, 2025 to Sunday, 12th January, 2025.
In a release signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo and addressed to all Principals of the Federal Unity Colleges, the ministry stated that the resumption was due to ongoing renovation works in most of the colleges.
The release captioned ‘Extension of resumption date of 112 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs)’ reads “Above subject refers, please.
“I write to inform you that the Honourable Minister of State for Education has approved the extension of the resumption date for the 2nd term of 2024/2025 Academic Sessions of FUCs from 5th January, 2025 to Sunday, 12th January, 2025.
The extension is due to the ongoing renovation works in most of the FUCs. Please, accept the assurances of my warm regards”.
As at press time, the Akwa Ibom State government led by Pastor Umo Eno has yet to issue statement on resumption of public schools for the second term of 2024/25 academic session.
