The Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Chairman, Public Procurement Committee, Rep. Unyime Idem, has laid the foundation for the construction of a one-storey building for Administrative Block and a Classroom Block at Western Annang Secondary Commercial School (WASCO) in Ukanafun local government area.
This is in fulfillment of the promise he made during the school’s 50th anniversary in December 2023, that he will construct and donate some infrastructure to the school to give it the facelift it deserves.
WASCO, a popular secondary school in Ukanafun local government area and Annang land, has produced prominent sons and daughters within and outside the locality.
The school, established in 1972, has suffered neglect from several local and state government administrations, while promises to fix it by past leaders have failed.
Addressing the gathering before laying the foundation stone to signal commencement of work, Rep. Idem, an alumnus of the school, said the gesture was imperative to restore WASCO back to its glory days.
“This project is to bring back life to WASCO and will be delivered in exactly four months, with the cooperation of the contractor, school management and Ikot Akpa Nkuk community. The classroom block will be equipped with writing desks.”
“Till I leave office, I will never embark on a project that will be abandoned. I will ensure to complete every project I attract to my federal constituency.”
“We will do our best to bring back the lost glory of WASCO which we used to enjoy back then,” Idem concluded.
On their part, the management of the WASCO, led by the Principal General, Elder Udeme Akpan and the chairman, Parents, Teachers Association (PTA) Elder Udobong Wilson, and the alumni Association, led by a representative of the president, Ofonime Umanah, expressed gratitude to the federal lawmaker for giving back to the school that made him, noting that his name will forever remain evergreen in the annals of the school’s history.
This is not the first time the federal lawmaker is intervening in WASCO, as he had already donated a tastefully equipped ICT centre to the school, installed street lights in the school premises and constructed the 1.2 km Akpan Assiek market road, where the institution is situated.
