The death of Maj.General Edet Akpan Rtd, has been described as a great loss, not only to Nsit Atai, but the entire Akwa Ibom state and Nigeria.
The late Maj.General who died last Friday at his Uyo residence, was until his demise, a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.
Born in 1940, the late Edet Akpan, who held various traditional titles in Ibibio land and Efik Kingdom of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States respectively, was a revered son of Iwok village in Nsit Atai local government area of Akwa Ibom state.
Speaking on the loss, a renowned Surgeon, Dr. Ndem Ndem, noted that Obong Akpan’s demise had created a vacuum which would be very difficult, if not impossible, to fill.
Dr. Ndem, a respectable indigene of Nsit Atai, who stated this in his message he sent to the bereaved family, while expressing rude shock, also stressed that by Akpan’s death, himself had lost a great father, a political pillar and an adviser.
Dr. Ndem, who is also the APC political leader of Nsit Atai said: “The news of our father’s passing came to me with great shock, having had not expected such news at anytime soon.
“The late Elder Edet Akpan was a devout Christian, one of the great Pillars of Quo Iboe Church, a community leader and a dependable political force in Nsit Atai in particular and Akwa Ibom state in general. His death is a colossal loss, not only to your immediate family, but Nsit Atai and Akwa Ibom state.
“Nsit Atai people will always remember Major General Akpan when ridding on the first ever major tarred road in our local government.
“We will miss him. Ibibio sons and daughters will miss him. Akwa Ibom state and Nigeria will miss him. We pray the Almighty God to accept his soul for eternal repose, and also grant the bereaved family the fortitude to bear this great loss”.
