High Tariff: Succour underway, as University of Uyo SUG, MTN sign MOU

…Uniuyo community would enjoy subsidized rates -SUG President, Ndueso

By Ime Silas

The Student Union Government (SUG), University of Uyo (Uniuyo), and telecommunications giant in Nigeria, MTN have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) that would see the Uniuyo community exempted from the recent hike in telecommunications charges.

This move which was disclosed by the Uniuyo SUG President, Comrade Ndueso Peter in a statement he personally signed indicated that the partnership involved establishment of the MTN Tech Hub UNIUYO, the provision of SIM services, and other benefits.

The Students’ leader said “Dear Tuskers, in a bid to exclude University of Uyo students from excessive taxes and the high tariffs imposed by telecommunications service providers nationwide—and in partial fulfillment of our commitment to ensuring the general welfare and ease of every UNIUYO student—

Yesterday, I signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DaPTEP, an agent of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. This partnership involves the joint establishment of the MTN Tech Hub UNIUYO, the provision of SIM services, and other benefits”.

Shedding more light on the development, Comrade Ndueso continued “This MoU enables MTN Nigeria to provide a special tariff plan specifically designed for the University of Uyo community. This will separate our students from the general public in terms of charges while also working towards subsidizing our data costs.

According to BusinessDay.ng and the official MTN website, MTN’s current cheapest flat bundle (MTN Pulse) charges ₦13.8 per minute (excluding taxes). However, this MoU introduces the UNIUYO Talk More Bundle, offering as low as ₦0.84 per minute and 200 free SMS for students and members of our community upon subscription.

With the MoU signed, effective from Friday, March 7, 2025, students and members of our community can visit MTN activation points across our campuses to obtain their special MTN Talk More SIM cards for free or activate the special bundle on their existing MTN SIMs at no cost.

More details about these subsidized call rates will be communicated through our official channels.
Be rest assured of our unwavering commitment to making student life easier and more affordable”.
