The supreme Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Accountant-General of the Federation and other related agencies from releasing federal allocations to the local government areas in Rivers State, citing the state’s defiance of court orders.
In a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-member panel dismissed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.
The court ruled that Governor Fubara acted unlawfully by presenting the 2024 appropriation bill before a four-member House, effectively denying 28 constituencies representation. It described his actions regarding the alleged defection of 28 lawmakers as “brigandage and dictatorship,” aimed at preventing the Assembly from functioning.
