Baring any last minute changes, the Akwa Ibom State Governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2023 gubernatorial election, Obong Bassey Albert, popularly known as ‘OBA’ has reportedly been penciled down for appointment as the pioneer Chairman of the newly established South-South Development Commission (SSDC).
Bassey, a former Commissioner for finance in Akwa Ibom State, is the immediate-past senator who represented Akwa Ibom Northeast (Uyo ) Senatorial District at the 9th National Assembly.
He defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly after the 2023 governorship election that was won by the current governor and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno.
It was learnt that a prominent political figure from Akwa Ibom State was behind the move to see the former two-term senator clinch the plum job.
It was further gathered that key positions in the yet-to-be announced board of the newly created commission have been shared in alphabetical order amongst the six states of the geopolitical zone.
The six states constituting the South-south zone are: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers States.
It was learnt that while Akwa Ibom State has been reportedly tipped for Chairmanship of the board, the position of the Managing Director (MD) is said to have been zoned to Delta state.
