As at the time of filing this report, Mr Godwin Edet who is one of the Media aides to Gov Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has been arrested by detectives from the State Police Command and he’s being interrogated for alleged cyberstalking, defamation and other Crimes.
The suspect’s arrest followed a petition tagged “Case Of Cyber Stalking, Criminal Defamation Of Character, Intimidation And Threat To Life”, submitted by Mr. Ndiana Okon Asuquo.
Parts of the petition sighted by our paper read “We are solicitors to Ndiana Okon Asuquo ‘M’ of Oboyo Ikot Ita, Nsit IbomLocal Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. (Hereinafter referred to as “Our Client”) and on whose instructions and directives we are acting”.
According to the petition “That it is the brief of our client that he is a lecturer and an ICT personnel at Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, Uyo.
“That he woke this morning only to see the pictures and videos of his wife trending on social media showing how his wife was in the hospital bed receiving treatment as a result of injuries she sustained in an accident last year July, 2024.
“That the suspect has been a thorn in the flesh of our client and members of his family and has sworn to use his position as an S.A to the Governor to terrorize our client in the compound, intimidate them and make life totally unbearable and uncomfortable to them at all costs.
“That the action of the suspect has reduced drastically the image of our client’s wife and her reputation to the lowest ebb in the eyes of the general public and as such defamed her character and reputation”.
While expressing confidence in the ability of the police to handle the matter, the petition prays thus:
“We most sincerely implore the police force to invoke sections 31 & 32 of the Police Act, 2020 amongst others.
Arrest the suspect in this petition and bring him to book accordingly within the confines of the law.
We count on your usual cooperation in this direction and looking forward with great eagerness to hearing from you soonest”.
Efforts to speak to the suspect were unsuccessful as he was said to be behind bars when our correspondent visited the Ikot Akpanabia State Headquarters of the Nigeria Police.
