Nigerian Lady makes history; sworn-in as Mayor of Leeds, UK

A Nigerian lady, Abigail Katung (middle in picture above) has been sworn-in as Mayor of Leeds, in the United Kingdom. Abigail Katung is the wife of Senator Marshal Katung, representing Kaduna South in the 10th Senate.

Abigail is the 1st African in over a hundred years to occupy the office of Lord Mayor of Leeds. She was sworn-in at a colourful, yesterday. The occasion was well attended with dignitaries including Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, former Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Martin Luther Agwai, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, members of the diplomatic community, and many others, formed a rich roll call of guests at the ceremony.

Marshal Katung, a former member of the Kaduna State Executive Council, represents his constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He is a close friend of the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South, Senator Ekong Sampson.

Yesterday, Senator Sampson joined his colleagues, members of the diplomatic community and other dignitaries, both within and outside the United Kingdom to witness Mrs Katung’s inauguration.
