Personality Watch: Meet Nigeria’s first ever Female Professor

She is the first ever female professor that Nigeria produced and her name is Adetowun Omolara Ogunseye.

She was born in December 1926 in Benin City, Edo state to parents from Ogun State. In 1946 she was the first female student in Yaba college of Technology and also the first female graduate from the institution receiving a diploma in 1948. Apart from being the first female professor in Nigeria, she is the first professor of Library and Information Services.

Ogunseye is also the first Nigerian woman to get a degree from Cambridge University. She is an activist for the social rights of women. She was granted a scholarship to study geography at Newham College of the University of Cambridge earning BA and MA degrees in 1952 and 1956, respectively; she became the first Nigerian woman there.

She earned another master’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College, Massachusetts. USA, in 1962. In 1973, she became a professor at the University of Ibadan. Between 1977 and 1979, she was appointed as the dean of faculty of education at the same university. She was the first woman to become a dean in any Nigerian university.
