B/Faso introduces ‘productive’ prison reforms to reduce sentence

Prisoners and those awaiting trial can now work in agricultural settlements and sites in accordance with African cultures, President Ibrahim Traoré has said. The new reforms, reports say, would not only help in reforming the convicts positively, but would also assist in food production across the country.

According to the President, one month of work reduces their sentence by three months under the new Prison Reforms laws.

President Ibrahim TraorĂ© stated, “From today, our prisoners will work in agriculture while their sentences are reduced. Our laws must reflect African values.”

He added that many African nations still use colonial-era punishment and rehabilitation methods.

This method will reform and correct a lot of youths who find themselves in prison.
Analysts hold that Burkina Faso is currently undergoing revival through the efforts of the young leader.
