According to an X App (formerly Twitter) user with the name ‘AGovC Executive Press Secretary’, today marked another troubling development in the ongoing detention of Dr. Cho Ayaba. The appeals court rejected the legal challenge to his extended detention and, more concerningly, imposed restrictions on public access to their decision. This raises serious questions about the transparency and legality of Norway’s judicial process in this case. By shrouding their decision in secrecy, the Norwegian authorities undermine trust in a system that claims to uphold democratic and human rights values.Â

Adding to this opacity, the Norwegian police, supported by the courts, have imposed restrictions on sharing information related to the case until an indictment—if any—is brought against Dr. Ayaba. Even the newly appointed lawyer has been restricted in what he can disclose, explaining the sudden silence following his initial optimism. This suppression of information not only curtails the rights of the defense but also raises alarms about the fairness of the investigation.
We must ask: What are the Norwegian authorities trying to hide? If there is no evidence after months of intrusive searches and investigations, why continue the detention and restrict public scrutiny? Such practices appear more akin to authoritarian regimes than to a nation that prides itself on human rights and the rule of law.
Moreover, the appeal to the Supreme Court is now underway. While we hope for justice to prevail, we cannot ignore the systemic issues this case exposes. Norway’s approach—combining detention without clear evidence and restrictions on information—raises profound concerns about whether due process is being respected.
In addition to this, Norway must confront its complicity in enabling regimes such as Cameroon. **Reports by Human Rights Watch (HRW)** and the **UN Committee Against Torture (CAT)** have consistently highlighted Cameroon’s appalling record of extrajudicial killings, systematic torture, and abuses targeting civilians, particularly in Southern Cameroons. Norway, as a nation that claims to uphold human rights, must immediately cease supporting a regime that has been condemned by multiple international organizations for its atrocities.
By maintaining ties with Cameroon, Norway risks complicity in crimes against humanity and undermines its credibility on the global stage. It is imperative that the Norwegian government align its actions with its principles and stop supporting regimes that engage in widespread human rights violations. #HumanRights
