Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu has stressed the need for more funding to be allocated to the Commission in view of its many programmes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who stated this while appearing before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja today to defend the Commission’s 2025 budget proposal further noted that such additional funding would enhance smooth running of the Commission’s affairs.
He explained the need for additional funding to support key areas of INEC’s work.
Some of These programmes according to the Chairman included the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, logistics for off-cycle elections, replacing damaged election materials like Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), Ballot Boxes, and Voting cubicles, as well as repairing INEC offices in Local Government Areas.
Prof Mahmood further stated that 2025 was a crucial year for preparing for the 2027 general elections and stressed the importance of receiving funds on time to ensure smooth operations.
