2027: Presidency speaks on Tinubu/Shettima campaign billboards

The Presidency has firmly disclaimed the growing appearance of 2027 campaign billboards promoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, warning that such actions violate the nation’s electoral laws.

In a press statement released today by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency expressed concern over the rising number of campaign billboards featuring President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and Senator Oluremi Tinubu, particularly in Abuja and Kano.

“The Presidency has observed, with dismay, the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima,” the statement began.

While acknowledging the enthusiasm and loyalty of their supporters nationwide, the Presidency stressed that neither President Tinubu nor Vice President Shettima has endorsed or authorised any 2027 campaign efforts.

“While President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support, the two leaders do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land,” the statement read.

It emphasized the importance of upholding the country’s electoral laws, warning that premature campaigning could jeopardize the credibility of the democratic process. “Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages. As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process,” Onanuga noted.

The Presidency made it clear that no campaign should be launched until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issues an official timetable.

“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel—be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television,” the statement affirmed.

Accordingly, the government has called on all individuals and groups behind these billboard campaigns to “cease immediately.”

President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima remain focused on delivering their governance mandate, with key priorities in economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.

“When INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start, President Tinubu will duly inform Nigerians of his plans,” the statement concluded.
